Posts: 658 (07/04/2008 08:41:12) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None Hi everyone we took on a retired greyhound %!+%! yesterday & she is wonderfull, she is getting on with our terrier she was speyed on Friday so is a little sore , but she has accepted her crate & so far she is behaving beautifully, she is gentle, an absolute doddle to walk & she was superb last night and didnt make a sound, all in all were all totally in love with her She only retired in Dec last year & is an Irish girl , so her prey drives pretty high but she is so easily distrated by dog biscuits Greyhounds do get a dab press but i basically put that down to people giving them the opertunity to chace , she will never be allowed to run free & its early days yet so my therey is if i am ever mindfull to the fact she was bred & trained to chace small animals then hopefully we wont go far wrong All in all her first day heres been an absolute pleasure http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1215/4506242/10442721/312134047.jpg

Only problem was her length and she decided that the settee was hers, which meant no room for anybody else. I imagined they wanted a lot of exercise, but this one was much happier lying down. Only problem was making sure she didn't get to chase cats.

My next door neighbours have a retired greyhound. She is an angel with people but show her a cat or another dog and she is a nightmare. She has jumped through a fencing panel chasing a cat and ended up at the vets to have the splinters and pieces of fence removed from her legs and armpits - I know dogs don't have armpits but you know what I mean. That was after she put her legs through ours in her excitement of coming to see me for a cuddle. They don't know their own strength. I go in to let her in the garden and feed her sometimes and she seems so huge compared to my Ollie the Border. Their hind legs are really big and muscly. She is very gentle though when taking a biccie and is very sloppy. I am sure that your new friend will bring you many happy years of friendship. Let us know how she settles down with you. Fran.x

Posts: 369 (07/04/2008 09:24:35) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Hubby & I are greyhound fans in a big way........... we owned 2 full greyhounds & 3 greyhound X'x (plus a bitza).......... all at the same time, and we can endorse the fact theat despite the impression that many people have of them they make WONDERFUL pets........such good natures,so gentle & loving........ and they dont want endless exercise........ the usual couple of good walks a day the same as any other dog, and a nice warm place to sleep, (preferably the sofa lol)........ ex racers do have, as Kay said , a heightened sense of the chase, but if you are aware of this then its not a problem Well done Kay, its a decision that I know you will not regret. All our girls lived to ripe old ages, except one who got bone cancer at 8, but the others all went on to 13/14........ which I'm told is quite an age for the breed. Have fun Kay Hugs Terrie x

Posts: 658 (07/04/2008 10:48:37) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	She has just been a good walk & met my moms cat & was a little bit scared off her, she backed away , but she was stationary , a moving cat will be a different ball game, so far she has just slept & eaten a little, but all in all if this is anything to go by i wish i had done it yrs ago I am going to keep a diary off her life for the first year & then i can turn it into a scrapbook for her 4th birthday next April

We had a retired greyhound for about 6 years, from the time she finished racing and she was the most delightful creature. After a coupe of years, she had learned to be a 'real' dog - snifffing and playing etc. Before that, she walked straight ahead on the lead, and didn't stop and sniff the edges or anything. It was lovely to see her blossom. One thing, greyhounds are accomplished thieves and will walk past a plate of biscuits without breaking step and these will be at least one missing and a contented greyhound munching in a hidden corner!!! Good luck with her - she'll repay the love you are giving her a thousandfold. I just wish more people knew what wonderful pets they make. (off the soap-box!). We now have whippets as they are smaller, but actually our grey didn't take up much more room and was calmer. One of the whippies we've recently adopted is like a demented flea!! Janet

They are very playful and so friendly and she doesn't have them on leads and they are great with all dogs they meet and are now having a great life. Lots of luck to you with yours and I'm sure you will reap great rewards from her hugs maggie

I once worked in a dog sanctuary and we had one in there called Humphrey I wanted to take him home with me when I left but couldn't he was the most adorable dog and one day I'll probably have one or two myself. I hope you have lots of happy times together. Jenny x

We were very cautious about Pippa and didn't let her off for a couple of years, then when she was with a dog-sitter when we went on holiday, she let her off and there was never a problem. I'm sure she would have chased any cat that ran across her path, but was perfectly OK on the playing field and no problem with other dogs at all - even the small ones. Her best friend was my Shih Tzu, Mei. I do hope you get up the courage to let her off when she has bonded with you - a grey in full flight is a sight to behold - and ours (plus others we knew) always ran in huge circles! Janet
