DON'Tknow what you're using Lonnie, but my craft knife blades last quite a long time. HOWEVER my Fiskars trimmer blades seem to
go blunt REALLY quickly! I've always said I don't know how DB says they last for 1000 cuts, because mine bloomin' don't!! no where near!
Sheila W made my granddaughter a JacobsLadder for her birthday, it's absolutely beautiful! xx |

Hi Lonnie,
I think it largely depends on what you are doing with them. I like nice sharp blades to give a crisp look. As a devotee of decoupage I was once told that you should change your blade for EVERY project ! Cutting mat board is asking rather a lot. I use loads of this and several years ago invested in a proper mat board cutter ( it also has a blade for picture framing ) and it is BRILLIANT. It has certainly paid for itself as I make lots of books as well and refuse to buy the expensive kits. It was even set up for me as a left hander so very comfortable to use. You do need to replace the blades but despite the enormous amount of use that I give it the blades seem to last a long time. Longer than a craft knife blade would. Another tip is this. One of my students horrifies me with her use of a Stanley knife, even for the most delicate of operations ! However, it does the trick. This might be an alternative with a large rubber based metal ruler. Yes, I have one of those as well !! If you need information on the mat board cutter that I have, please let me know and I will try to help. Best wishes Sonia |

Hi all
Jacobs ladders are a bit like the wallet the milk man used to have, they mysteriously flip over to reveal the other side when you move the top back and forwards, GREAT FUN...... Sonia/Jacqui - I am using woodware blades which fit into the knife in Joannas shop, I think the mat board must be very demanding, I bought a 45cm rubber based all metal ruler with v large handle on the top as I was worried about my pinkies, and I have to say its now my ruler of choice Im not using any others. Sonia I would love the details of your mat board cutter, I'll PM you. thanks everyone for your help and advice L x |

I use a Surgical Scalpel knife and blades, if you google Swann-Morton you will see them, the handle costs around £2.50 and 100 blades cost £10 (but I think you
can get smaller qauntities of them) I got mine in craft store in the Artists section.

If you're cutting mountboard it might be worth trying one of those disposable knives with lots of blade edges. You just break off the old and use the next
one. Large DIY shops sell them for £2 or so and this is what I use for cutting basic mountboard shapes. I use Joanna's lovely knife for intricate work as
it is comfortable to use. Eunice, thanks for the link for scalpel blades, I've been trying to locate them as I find the scalpel knife excellent as well.

I saw both Petra and I think it was Jayne, say on C&C if you cut on a glass mat, i.e. chopping board the blades will last much longer. There is less
resistance for the blade and you get a cleaner cut.
If you have a Home Bargains near you, they have glass chopping boards in for around £1.00 HTH Sue |

Since Paul Church said about his glass cutting mat I have been cutting on a ceramic tile (see this months newsletter) I do find that I get a much better cut
and that the blades do last better. I do change my blades every couple of weeks out of habit as it is easy to keep going and not realise just how blunt
they've become. A blunt knife is far more dangerous to use than a sharp one.

missread that a bit. For thicker cutting I use an ordinary Stanley knife. I buy 20 blades for £1, but sometimes get the proper Stanley
ones. Because it's easier to hold, I find my old arthritic fingers don't swell so much.
Sue don't mean to disagree with you, but can remember Petra saying she used a lot more blades on her glass cutting mat, because they wore out much quicker.Of course though she said you get MUCH better results. I really miss her, I loved to watch her work xx |

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was about our local football team - Sheffield United are known as The Blades. And I'm not even a football
fan - must have been indoctrinated by the local rivalry with the Owls.

Your right Jacqui, now you have said it, I can remember her saying it. Sorry Lonnie, if I gave you the wrong info. You do get a better cut though, I use
disposable knives, as I find them more convenient. I do prefer to cut out decoupage with scissors where possible though, I find that easier.
