GLASS CUTTING MATS |
Lead | |
|
I was thinking of buying a glass cutting mat but was wondering if you need any particular craft knife for this purpose as in the past I have been told using
glass mats blunt your blades really quickly.
Any info would be welcome hugs maggie |

I was told a heatproof worktop saver is good, not only can you cut on them you can use a heat gun for embossing.

Yes it does blunt your blade more quickly than an ordinary cutting mat, but you do get a better finish. You can use any cutting knife, but the ones where you
can buy replacement blades or the disposable ones are good, and reasonably cheap.
Maggie don't go to the expense of buying one of the ones on the market just for crafting, go to Home Bargains and buy a rectangular one about the size of A4 for £1.00 or you can use a ceramic tile. Sue |

Hi Maggie, I have one but I only use it for my heat gun, I love cutting and do loads of cut work, I've never seen the need to do it
on glass. Sorry if this offends anyone, but "why fix it if it ain't broken?"
If I have a lot of intrcate cutting to do, I just make sure I use a new blade. xx The one I have is one that you use in the kitchen, and it's about A3, was I think about £7.99 xx |

Hiya Maggie
I am here!!!!! It does blunt your blades quicker, but the end result is better. I have a glass cutting mat from EK Success and the Craft Knife by the same company and it does not scratch the glass mat. I am going to be getting a Do Crafts one at the weekend as more shops seem to stock those as apposed to the EK Success one's. So it makes sense for me to have a Do Crafts one for when I am out and about demoing, plus they are cheaper!!!!!! I have several craft knives and I will let you know after the weekend how I found them on the Do Crafts mat. Some people have said that they have used kitchen cutting mats, but have not tried them myslef, I have however tried glossed ceramic tiles and they work for a period of time, depending how much pressure you put on it Paul x |

The main reason I was considering buying a glass mat was that it is said that when cutting round circular shapes or anything rounded it glides round the shapes
better and there is no dragg as with the normal mats.
I usually cut most things out with small scissors but I am having some problems with my wrist and fingers at the moment and find it very painful I think it is called "repetative cardmaking syndrome" hugs maggie |

I use a kitchen worktop saver....(got different sizes for the different areas I craft in)..got the last diddy one from the £ shop.
As to the knife, the one I pick up most of the time, out of habit I suppose...didn't have the choice years ago so it's the one I've used from yonks back. Anyway, it's a DIY one with the blades that you snap a bit off as it blunts....inexpensive and so are the replacement blades, which last ages! Most DIY counters have them. Perfect for rounder shapes etc with the glass mat, no rubber to wedge into. I have tried umpteen knives (yet to try the new fiskars one) and they all have their uses, but not practical if you're replacing the blades of them often. San x |

I always use a glass mat, just an ordinary kitchen one. I was looking at one in Morrisons last week, quite a large one, for £4.99. I've only seen one
glass mat advertised for crafting and it was a lot dearer than this. Mind you, the kitchen ones obviously don't have the grid lines on them. I don't
use a craft knife very often so not sure if the glass mat blunts them more or not.

Ceramic tile for me! I do have an X cut glass cutting mat but I find with the tile I can move the tile around easier if I need to turn the work around, if
I'm having a wonky day I've even low tacked the card to the tile. Top Tip Mr Church!!
