Went to a carboot sale this morning,i couldn't believe what 2 ladies were selling there cards for.50p-£1.It was so sad, as the cards were lovely and you
could see that a lot of work had gone into them.Even bookatrix were selling for £1.50 and they said that people were complaining about paying that. They had
only sold 10 cards in 3 hours and were packing up to go home.Unless you are a crafter,i don't think people realise how much it can cost in time and money
to make a card,i do feel that sometimes certain craft shows can give a false impression as to how much a card costs to make, when they break down the cost it
looks like the card only costs a few pence, they never account for the time spent making it.Anyone listening to this is bound to get the idea that we are making
a small fortune when we sell our cards,...........i wish.

I totally agree, I don't know anyone who has made much at car boots people always want something ofr nothing, regardless of what they are buying. I am
lucky my husband & friend sell my cards for me at their work (both work in offices) and I only do them by request. I have found that people who ask you
for cards are willing to spend more money on them. I usually sell Book of Trick boxed for £5 and some people have given me extra in tips because the card was
so much more than they expected (these clients usually pay M&S card prices to start with).
I do find it hard to decide what to charge. I usually charge £1.50 for small card, £2.50-£3 for a large card and £3-5 for a boxed card. I don't know what the going rate is though. I always tell people who have requested cards that they are under no obligation to buy them and if what I have made is not what they had in mind they can sent it back. I would be interested to heat what other people charge. Caroline |

my A5 cards sell at £2.50 n boxed go for £4-£5 depending on the work i put into them, i sell to family n friends, work colleagues n have been given double the
amount i have asked for them on lots of occasions when the card has exceeded expectation.
i keep thinking i will do a carboot with them sometime but never have the time as i spend that looking round them! today i got some naval postcards n some very old black n white photo's last week i got a fairy photo album (was a bargain but now i dont know what to do with it!!!!) it's all illustrated inside with apertures for the photo's, would look beautiful with little girls pic's in but my boys are 21 n 25 so dont' think they qualify, lol. dont sell your cards for less than you would pay for them is my advice, keep them, swap them but dont do yourself down. chell x |

I know what you mean. Me and my mum had a bootsale last year. We had about 400 to cards to sell and we were both excited. It was a baking hot day and we got
our display ready and then we stood and we waited, and we waited, and we waited and ...... you get the picture. Everyone said they liked our cards, but when we
said they were £2 each they just walked away. We tried to stay patient. Anyway at the end of the day we had sold 18 cards. It cost £10 to park the car and by
the time you deduct petrol and cups of tea etc. we might as well not have bothered. The thing is, we make all these cards, but what are we supposed to do with
them. Mine are just gathering dust at the moment and I haven't got the heart to throw them away. Any suggestions please. June x x x

Hi June, if you want your cards to go to people who will really appreciate them and dont mind donating them to a charity then Support our Soldiers make up
parcels through out the year but especially at christmas and they like to put cards in the parcels so the soldiers can send cards to their family and freinds.
Support our soldiers have lots of regional co-ordinaters so if you are near by one you can drop them off (so no postage) or post them to their head person.
This is the website link http://www.supportoursoldiers.co.uk/aboutus.html
The cards are truely appreciated both by the soldiers and by the recipients and thats what I love about it.

I have a foot in both camps here, I sell my cards in the local Country Market for £1.50 each and maybe sell 6 a month, I also sell at local Car Boot sales and
in the last week have sold 188 cards at 50p each. As a craft addict I make cards all the time, all day every day. I do not work so it keeps me sane. I make
huge quantities therefore I need to sell as many as possible.
I can produce the majority for less than 25p each, by buying in bulk from E-Bay and pound shops, for instance I bought 100 5" x 7" cards in The Works last week for £7, thats 7p for card and envelope. I buy cello bags in quantities of 500 which work out at 3p each, combine this with Joannas marvellous cds, two sheets of printed paper are all I need to make a card for less than 20p. I have had this discussion with my hubbie, who does model aircraft and spends hundreds on kits and stuff which he invariably crashes so that is money wasted in my opinion, I make cards to make cards not to make money, but I always cover the cost of my materials. Perhaps the most important thing is to find the best venue for you, that sells the cards you make at the price you want, sounds easy and could take a lot of leg work and disappointed sales before you hit on the right formula. Believe me I have been there, done it and got the T-shirt!!!!..lol I have started a thread within Hints & Tips to collate your top tips on selling cards so that we can all help each other to achieve SALES...................... |

What a worthy cause. I certainly will donate my cards to the soldiers. That's what cardmaking is all about - making people happy. Thanks for your
suggestion. x x x

I really don't know why I moan after reading this. I have ladies who phone me up, to order cards
I only do A5, A5 in boxes , A4 in envelopes, and A4 in boxes. my price is £2.20,£4.50, £3.50 and £7.00. Most of the big boxes are Bookatrix and each page is filled with images. I get boxes from CraftCreations in 25 tops and 25 bottoms so it comes a little bit cheaper. My ladies are happy but I wish I could expand to doing different shape cards, but they don't go down very well sometimes . We live in a village with the normal shops (co-op, spar , a few indian and chinese take aways, couple of hairdressers etc and one lady who has used her front room for years as a shop selling china, glass , etc and cards,( thinking back, nearly every other house up our street had a shop of some sort in their front room) Remember when!!!!!!!!! Anyway... I have been with this lady for about five years When I sold my A5 cards for £2.00 she took 40p now I sell them for £2.20 she takes 50p. So I get £1.70 Sorry for the rambling but I hope this helps!!!! Jen |

I forgot to say on my previous post that I made enquiries about doing a proper craft fayre locally in the run up to Christmas, the charge for a small table for
a one day was £56. I politely declined the opportunity. I just could not make enough to cover those sort of costs.

Marie Curie Cancer Care also have a card appeal running each year. They sell the cards in their day hospices and shops. The money all goes towards caring for
the terminally ill. Info on the docrafts site.

I do a lot of local craft fairs. The least I have paid for a table is £15. One of them this summer wanted £150 for a stall outside and £170 in a marque. There
is no way I could cover that. Unfortunately it meant that there was very little handmade craft, most of it was bought in.
We have three regular Christmas ones that charge around £20-£25 each and I usually make a profit. I have had someone look at my £2 cards and say `I think I'm shopping at the wrong place with those prices!`. He's probably right, there is a card shop locally that sells cards for 30p. They may not be hand made, but it is difficult to compete with that. |

Our local craft shop has special bags for the Marie Curie cards. You take as many as you want and then return them to the shop.

I do boot sales and craft sales. The most expensive craft sale I do costs £20 this is at a local school and for that price you get loads of space and I always
make a good profit, unfortunately they only do 2 a year, I do a regular craft sale the table cost £13.00 and I make a small profit but really enjoy doing it. I
used to only sell cards but found I could not make a profit, so I now make childrens jewellery and dolls clothes and they sell well.
I also do boot sales, I do not sell many cards but I do sell a lot of craft supplies, I make up bags of scrap card, sell off unwanted items, and make up embellishments. I usually make a profit. when we do boot sales we put up two pasting tables and oh fills one with our rubbish and usually we sell enough of this to cover our costs so any craft stuff sold is profit. |
