JACQUI Q |
A LITTLE WARNING |
Lead | |
|
I don't know if anyone else has received one of these. Today I had an email with the proper stamp (Icon) on the top, from HM Tax
office, informing me that after them checking my fiscal something or other, I was entitled to a tax rebate, It said I was to allow I think 10 days for it to be
sorted, and I was to click on a link. I didn't do this, but sent the mail to a few online friends to see if anyone else had heard of it. Beady eyed Paula,
wrote and pointed out a couple of spelling mistakes that I hadn't noticed, and she also clicked on the link, which had asked for my NH number, and bank
details. I don't usually get suckered into this sort of mail, but really didn't know if it was a scam or not. It had all my details on it, so obviously
whoever is doing it, has gone to quite a bit of trouble, so I thought I would tell you all "just in case". xx Jacqui

Yep I have been getting these at this time of year for the last 3 years, I reported it to the tax office but never even got a reply, don't think they care.
It does seem a believable email if you don't have alot of dealings with the tax office. |

good warning Jacqui - most of my mails like that come from a US source and quote the money I owe in dollars so it's dead easy to know they are fakes but if
they are coming with UK amounts then it would be easy for someone to believe them - glad you spotted it

The Tax Office should already have all your details anyway so they would not need to ask for them via e-mail would they?

This is scary. We need to be so careful. Thanks for pointing this out, Jacqui. Will we ever get rid of these people, trying to scam us? I must be a
multi-millionaire with all the lottery cash that I have 'won' and the beneficiary emails I have had! Just think, I could buy everything in your shop,
Joanna!

Definitely scary. I have had very realistic ones from Lloyds TSB, HSBC and Abbey I don't bank with any of them, but because they are so realistic looking
it's understandable that some of the vunerable people get caught. The people that make up all this spam mail and also the viruses are completely without
integrity or concience

If you put your mouse arrow over the link (don't click!) you can always tell where the mail has come from by reading the email address. The address is
always something very obscure!!
We get loads of these mails here in the University. Problem is some people do believe half of these mails and then get in trouble. Anything like this would certainly not come from the Government department or a bank etc. They would write! Cheers Jan

I know banks don't do this Jan, and it's the same with ebay & paypal, if it hasn't got your name on it, then it's a
scam. I DID hover over the addy, and it said HM Customs,Tax and Excise, the only thing that seemed wrong was my tax office I think is up North, Newcastle I
believe, and this wasn't there. Because I'd never seen it before, it could quite easily have suckered me in. They'll do anything to get your
details won't they? Glad if it's helped someone else anyway. xx

Thanks for the heads-up Jacqui, I think the main reason I would have been suspicious is that the Tax office doesn't have my email address, or shouldn't

There's one doing the rounds so say from the post office/c&e saying that they have a parcel which has import duty/vat to pay. Fair few crafters are
getting caught out by it as so many of us order from overseas.

ive noticed too that when you delete them they dont go into the deleted file like all other genuine things to be binned, because i press delete then go into my
deleted stuff to empty it and its never there,i wonder if its so you cant trace them ????????

I've never given my email address to the tax people so I would be suspicious. I did get one from paypal that turned out to be genuine, but I didn't use
the link -I deleted the email and went to paypal directly and dealt with it. You need to have to treat all these emails with suspicion, it's a sign of the
times I'm afraid.
