We recently (last month) had a lot of trouble with losing the connection, not being able to get online or it was going extremely slowly and things kept timing out - even though the signal strength was excellent. My son went into the setup and checked the internet connection and to our horror we found two other computers were using our wireless network (fortunately they couldn't get into our computers - better firewalls and a much higher level of security on them) so we had to up the security level for the router and now we've told the router to only accept the PC and laptop codes. I didn't know you could do that
There are only 4 networks in our street that we can detect, and 3 of them are listed as secure, so you wonder why they picked ours and how they managed to get in to it, particularly as when we chose our password for the network we started by opening a dictionary and stabbing a page and then adding in a couple of digits chosen at random (we threw a dice) and added another word for good measure, so as not to choose something too predictable - scary isn't it.
My son did it all and I don't really understand it - it's a bit too techie for me - but things have been fine since. We now know to keep an eye on it, but it's something you don't think you need to check when you've got passwords, the security level they recommend and up to date firewalls etc. While he was sorting things out though, we pulled the power cable out of the router and I just hope they were in the middle of something really important when it went
and they have to now pay for a connection. I don't think they were upto anything sinister, just trying to avoid paying, and I think I know who - it's the tennants across the road as I saw one of them waving a notebook around trying to find a signal.
