Ever since we moved, our previous landlord has been chasing us for money he says we owe for damage to the old house. He started by saying he was going to keep the deposit and wanted an extra £600!!!
We have been arguing back and forth with the agents over the amount, and I finally got it down(reluctantly) to £360. He also has our almost new washing machine which wouldn't fit here, and my craft shed in the garden that I paid a lot of money for.
The house has now gone back on the rental market, so being nosey, I had a look at the pictures. He had charged us £65 for the removal of the ceiling fan/light fitting in the lounge and replacing it with an ordinary pendant fitting. Guess what? In the pictures of the newly renovated house, the fitting can clearly be seen, still in place. What a good thing I looked.
He also charged us £100 for replacing damaged tiles in the kitchen and bathroom( about half a dozen). In the photos, he has laminated the lot. We have paid towards this flooring.
In the ten years we were there he did nothing to the house. We had to decorate it ourselves, replace curtains etc.. We have come to the conclusion that he is charging us to completely refurbish the place, where as in fact he should only charge us for returning the property to the condidion it was when we moved in.
The managing agent wasn't happy when I told her about the light, and took it off the bill. Even with Heather's knowledge of housing law, we are unable to get it reduced any further, so when my housing benefit comes in today I will be sending them a cheque.
Heather wants to stand outside the house warning prospective tennants about him and the very dodgy electics, but neither of us want to see that place again!
Sorry to rant on, but I am sooooo angry! No wonder I'm going squirrels!
Sue
