It appears that the NHS is trying to use a back door route to get out of prescribing food for people who are unable to eat wheat or gluten, by claiming that they can now buy these foods in the supermarkets. What that doesn't take into account is the price of those foods - for people who have no other option. It costs an average of £3 for a 400g loaf of bread - that is half the size of a normal loaf. All the other products also carry premium prices and that adds up to a lot of money, all for a condition which they have no more control of than any other illness.
I have a teenage son who currently gets his bread, pasta and flour substitutes on prescription. I don't take advantage - I could order cakes, biscuits and all sorts of other things but I either buy them when the supermarket has marked them down or I make them myself, but the bread is particularly difficult to make palatable (more often than not it resembles a brick) and these days the bread available on prescription is almost as good as normal wheat based bread.
If you would sign this e-petition http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/27968 I would be so grateful, and it would really help if you would share it on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media which you might use.
Thanks ladies
Dawn
